DAN RAMIREZ
This McCormick Project, an homage to Nelson Algren, consists of eight images inspired by his acclaimed prose-poem "Chicago:City On The Make." It is installed on site at the Central Concourse of the new addition to McCormick Place in Chicago.
"...Though the poem's primary thrust is one of social critique, it was the song-like quality of his prose with fluctuations of rhythm and alliteration that punctuates each image of the down-trodden and dispossessed that was so inspirational. It suggested to me an approach through composition, color and light that could resonate and pay homage to the feeling behind his thoughts.
…Using acrylic polymers sprayed and brushed over aluminum panels, I painted horizontal and vertical bands of subtle and bold colors to evoke the sharp, and oftentimes staccato-like use of language similar to that employed by Algren to capture the human rhythms of the city and integrated them into the paintings and geometric rhythm of the architecture."
